2 volumes, 4to (9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.; 250 x 190 mm). 2 engraved title-pages, 2 engraved pictorial title-pages, engraved list of contents for vol. 1, 88 handcolored engraved plates, original watercolor of Marcus Attilius Regulus inserted; plate of Marcus Attilius Regulus in vol. 1 supplied from another copy, small tear to top margin of second text leaf of Claude Chevalier de Forbin and short tear along top margin to plate of La Princesse de Condé, some browning and staining throughout. Contemporary green straight-grain morocco, gilt border of interlocking circular and rectangular links forming a continuous chain, smooth spines gilt, red morocco lettering and numbering pieces, marbled endpapers, edges; boards rubbed, upper hinge of vol. 1 weak, marbled endpapers faded.

Maréchal (1750-1803) was a politician, philosopher, and writer. This little known work of his covers acts of courage and bravery of both men and women from ancient times through the eighteenth century.
