Catalogue Note

Illustrations from "one of a half-dozen great and rare illustrated books relating to North America" (Graaf). Lewis (c. 1819-1904) was an Englishman who migrated to St. Louis as a child and became a landscape artist whose work was exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His fine views here include small towns, Indian encampments, and rural views. "Maiden Rock" and "Hunting the deer by Moonlight" are in two states with differences in color.
