Catalogue Note

A handsome set of Levaillant's accounts of his two expeditions through South Africa collecting zoological and botanical specimens. Most of the scientific groundwork for his magnificent Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique was accomplished on these two trips.

The plates are topographical (many scenes of his encampments), ethnographic (including two of Hottentots and other native peoples), and natural history subjects (birds, hippo, giraffe, wolf, jellyfish).
