Lewis after Heriot, all of which are hand-colored, one hand-colored folding map, with paper guards, 8-page publisher's advertisement at the end. 19th-century tan calf, triple-fillet border, spine gilt, red and black morocco title labels on spine; upper joint cracking, some wear to extremities, a few scratches on covers.

Catalogue Note
First edition, a colored copy. Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, studied art after leaving high school, with the intention of pursuing a career in that field. He arrived in Canada in 1792, attaining a variety of posts in the British administration there including Assistant Storekeeper General and Deputy Postmaster General. During his tenure, he spent a good deal of time travelling, painting and writing. His work describes the fur trade, his northern voyages, and includes a scholarly study of North and South American Indians.
