Catalogue Note

First edition, an extraordinary copy of the most luxurious issue of this work, printed on Holland paper, hand-colored, in its original wrappers as issued.

The work illustrates in parables the heroic deeds of the Emperors of China, based on the Ming-dynasty work Dijian tushuo ["Ilustrated Discussion of the Emperor's Mirror," 1573]. These images were commissioned in the mid-18th Century by the Emperor Qianlong, to be drawn and engraved in Western style, from Father Jean-Denis Attiret, a Jesuit then resident in Beijing. The collection begins with a dedication to "Madame" who was Marie Josephine Louise de Savoie (1753-1810), wife of Louis XVI's brother.
