Catalogue Note

Copy 16 of 25 numbered copies on japon imperial (of a whole edition of 60), with 8 of the 9 lithographs signed by Beckmann in pencil.

"Beckmann's first original book illustrations and Paul Cassirer's first important livre de peintre.  Since Derain's Enchanteur Pourrissant, Paris, 1909, was Kahnweiler's first book of the same type, it is clear that although both publishers followed Vollard's lead, Paris did not have a monopoly at this early date.  Germany till the end of World War I had an important share in the development" (Artist & the Book).
