Catalogue Note

The earliest known printed paper dust-jacket on a book with an American imprint, one of three copies known. Unlike today's dust-jackets, those of the early 19th-century were used to enfold the book completely and are removeable, unlike today's wrappers in which the book is bound. The first paper (leaving aside cardboard) example is thought to be the 1830 English gift book Friendship's Offering.

The present example is one of only three surviving copies (the others at the Bodleian and Lilly Libraries).
