First edition, first printing of part 1, second printing of part 2; wrappers in various states. As Clark comments, "States of the wrappers are significant as binding variants only and should not be considered in assigning a priority to the printing of the text to which they are bound".

This is Hawthorne's second major collection of short stories and was published as numbers XVII and XVIII of Wiley and Putnam's Library of American Books. Scarce in wrappers.
