Catalogue Note
Fitzgerald's second novel. This story of the dissolute life and deterioration of a wealthy, glamorous young couple ("The victor belongs to the spoils"), was published on 4 March 1922 in a first printing of 20,600 copies, with large second and third printings following in April. Popular and critical response was disappointing and The Beautiful and the Damned has long been judged the weakest of Fitzgerald's five novels. A copy of the second printing of the novel in the Roger Rechler sale (Christie's New York, 11 October 2002, lot 89) has a 1937 inscription to Hollywood producer Jack Warner which included the phrase "this forgotten tragedy of the beautiful but dumb".
