8vo (220 x 145mm.), first American edition, first state (with sheets bulking 1 1/8 inches), portrait frontispiece (BAL state A), marginal illustrations in the text, upper panel of envelope addressed and signed by Twain mounted on front pastedown, original pictoral brown cloth stamped in gilt and black, spine a trifle faded, minimal small wear to bottom edge.

Catalogue Note

The author's ironic novel, published earlier in the Century Magazine. The autograph envelope, postmarked 2 April 1898, is from Twain while resident at the Hotel Metropole, Vienna, and is addressed to the editor of Century Magazine, in which the novel was first serialized in 1893-4.
