Catalogue Note
Melville's flawed but important novel of sexual confusion and gothic melodrama, in a beautifully preserved binding. Although Pierre was a commercial and critical disaster for Melville, it was reprinted in 1855. A good portion of the first edition was consumed in the 1853 Harper & Brothers fire.
