Catalogue Note
Maryland collects blankets for the Continental Army.
Agents appointed 2 April 1777 to provide supplies proved so unsatisfactory that supplies had to be purchased in Alexandria Virginia. As the fall approached, the condition of the Maryland troops became pitiable and special officers were appointed in each county to collect blankets and clothing from householders. The present form extracts the authorizing legislation to appoint collectors of blankets, and provides a form on the verso to make the appointments. Every housekeeper (except tavern-keepers) was to report how many blankets he owned "over and above the Number commonly used by the Family in the Winter Season, and shall deliver to the Collector One Half of the said Overplus ..." the collectors to receive 5% of the value of the blankets they collected.
