Catalogue Note
An unusual Revolutionary War naval commission, issued by the Maryland Council of Safety, acting for the Convention of Freemen of Maryland, which was the governing body of the state in the early stages of the Revolution. They appoint Abraham Gormon as first lieutenant of the Row Galley called The Conqueror "in the Service of this Province fitted out for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof and for the Defence of our Liberties."
The commission is signed by the president of the Council, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, and by George Plater, John Hall, Turbutt Wright, J. Nicholson, and Brice B. Worthington.
