Catalogue Note

I understand you are very fond of the new-fangled Constitution; perhaps that fondness will not increase in proportion to your consideration of it. After discussing some business regarding the sale of land, Arthur Lee, a staunch opponent of the Constitution, concludes with a disparaging remark about it to his cousin. Charles shared in George Washington's political outlook and aided in the struggle in Virginia for the ratification of the Constitution, which was adopted on 17 September 1787 at Philadelphia. His vigorous support of Washington's policies earned him appointment as Attorney General, a position he held from 30 November 1795 until the ouster of the Federalists in 1801.
