Catalogue Note
Missing Soldiers Roll. The text of the broadside begins with an open letter from Barton stating: "This Roll, like the preceding, contains only the names of persons whose friends have written to me for information, and about whom, up to this date, I have learned nothing definite. Please examine it and if you know what became of anyone here named, or have facts of interest to his friends, communicate them to me by letter . . . I have to thank friends everywhere, & especially returning soldiers for the large amount of information sent me."
For four years after the war, Barton superintended a search for missing soldiers under the authority of the government. Roll No. 5 constitutes the last in the series of five such broadsides issued by Barton. The Roll is accompanied by a printed circular letter [January 1867] with a secretarial signature of Barton on stationery of the "Office of Correspondence with the friends of the Missing Men of the United States Army" enclosed with "rolls of missing men number 5."
