Description

  • paper
Autograph letter signed ("Anty Wayne"), 2 pages (9 1/8 x 7 5/8 in.; 230 x 192 mm), Dra[y]ton Hall, [Charleston, South Carolina], 19 August 1782, to Messrs. Clay, Gibbons, and Habersham, returning several articles of clothing to settle accounts with Congress; light discoloration to central panel on verso of blank leaf.

Catalogue Note

Once Savannah fell to the Americans in July 1782, Wayne set up his headquarters at Drayton Hall until the British finally evacuated Charleston just before Christmas. Here he returns several articles of clothing with his receipt and that of his commanding officers: "This I presume will be a sufficient voucher to settle the general account with Congress."  He also mentions that "There was also some spirits obtained ... for use of the troops, to be charged to the Commissary Generals department."
