Condition

The board is sound. The varnish is uneven in places across the surface. There is a very minor horizontal surface scratch running across the figure's legs and arm, and another to her right foot, which are only visible on close inspection. There are one or two isolated surface markings, including to the red half moon shape on the left. There are some isolated areas of white reidue to the grain of the board. Otherwise the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals a few specks of by fluorescence the figure's right leg, but the varnish is opaque and uneven making the reading difficult to interpret. However, it would appear that athere are no signs of retouching. Held in a gilt wooden frame. Please telephone the department on 0207 293 5575 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

Middleton has become well known for the eclecticism of his oeuvre.  Rooted in Surrealism, his artistic style ranged from the Miro inspired forms of the present work, verging on abstraction, to the more geometric and cubist emphasis of works such as Canal: Damme (lot 47) and the vibrant energy and intense colouring of his landscapes (see lot 19).

Middleton had first attracted the attention of the national press following his first one man show at the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery in 1943. Subsequently offered further exhibitions in Dublin and Belfast, Middleton quickly become one of Ireland's most interesting artists and was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1970.
