Description

  •  fleur de lys mark
  • Porcelain
  • 15½cm., 6¼in.
modelled by Giuseppe Gricci after the Meissen model, carrying his wares in a bulky pack strapped to his back, a scroll in his left hand some damage and restoration

Condition

This figure has been extensively restored in the past and this restoration has now discoloured. There is overpainting to the brim of his hat, both sides of his open coat, the treestump next to his right knee, and his right arm. This arm appears to have been detached above the elbow and the right hand is possibly a replacement or has been partly restored. Assuming this model follows the Meissen original, he should be carrying an unfurled map in his left hand which is also lacking.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

Catalogue Note

The Meissen prototype for this model is one of a group of street vendors created by J.J. Kändler after original designs by Edme Bouchardon.  For an example of circa 1740, see Yvonne Adams, Meissen Figures, 2001, p. 14, no. 7.  The Meissen version of the print seller (also known as the map seller) has an unscrolled map in his right hand and a circular box in his left hand.
