Description

the padded, asymmetrically scrolled back above a stuffed seat with channel moulded scrolling facings on winged lion's paw feet with patera headers, recovered with greens and silver striped and ribbon motif damask and with two matching bolsters, early 19th century

Provenance

With Temple Williams Ltd., Haunch of Venison Yard, London, where acquired by Wilfrid Evill (£198) 25 April 1955 and thence by descent to Honor Frost.

Condition

In country house condition and in need of some attention. Chips and wear overall to decoration. There are some chips to the petals of the foliate rosettes. The right front leg with repaired split to the join above the paw foot. There is some separation to joins. Each end and the back is exposed. There is evidence of old wood worm. Wear and surface dirt to gilding. In original unrestored condition. An extraordinary and drammatic piece. The upholstery is especially worn and dirty and lacks stuffing. The associated damask material is worn in areas. The two similarly covered bolsters (approximately 64cm. long, 18cm. diameter), with metal-braid rosettes at one end, and edging at the other. There is evidence, visible through the rosette braid, of a different silk damask underneath the present green damask, with small buttons. There are three associated sections of curtain pelmet that come with this lot. One shaped rectangular section (382cm. wide, generally 30cm. high, with two tabs 37cm. high from top edge, applied to canvas. One shaped section 112cm. wide, 33cm. at highest, stepped up on right side to 30cm. high, and another similarly shaped section, 99cm. wide, 33.5cm. at highest, stepped up on left side to 30cm. high.; some minor splits.
