Description

  • incised F to rear of base for Etienne-Maurice Falconet, Director of Sculpture at the Sèvres factory, 1757-66
  • Porcelain
  • 23cm., 9in.
modelled after Boucher, the young shepherd snd shepherdess seated in an intimate pose as he holds a flute to her lips, the girl with a lamb tethered by her side, a dog by his feet, flute and fingers lacking

Condition

The boy's fingers are restored and the flute is lacking as is the big toe on her left foot. There are firing cracks extending up from the rim with some kind of in filling which may be contemporary: one short one runs through the footrim next to her foot, another in the centre of the back extends for approximately 7cm, and another at the base of the treetrunk on the side. There are typical small chips and losses to applied leaves, flowers and extremities. The handle of the basket by his side is lacking. There are some fine cracks which may be firing cracks or extended firing cracks: through the folds in her apron by her right hand, through the dog's back and right rear paw, through the footrim next to the lamb's tail.

Catalogue Note

See note to lot 275. Biscuit models produced during the directorship of Falconet at Sèvres, 1757-66, often bear the incised F mark.  The example of Les Flûteurs in the J. Paul Getty Museum had similar damage to this model and was restored using the original moulds at the Sèvres factory.
