Condition

Canvas has an old relining. An old varnish is spread rather unevenly over the canvas and has discolored with time, leaving the visible paint surface somewhat discolored. Scattered retouches are visible under UV in parts of the foliage at upper right, and in the lunging white dog in the foreground. A few other scattered retouches around the edge of canvas and dogs on the periphery. No major losses or holes to speak of. Painting could benefit from a cleaning of old varnish and perhaps a reevaluation of old retouches. Picture is unframed

Catalogue Note

The present lot is a copy with variations of a painting by Snyders currently in a Spanish Private Collection.  The artist of the present composition has reduced the number of dogs and has also depicted the dog wearing the spiked coat, who leads the charge in Snyders's version, behind the leaping piebald hound.  Spiked coats, such as the one seen here, were placed on hunting dogs in order to protect them from the boar's attack.
