Catalogue Note
The bearded face, compact torso, elongated legs, and exaggerated musculature of the figure of Hercules in the present relief recall the work of the Dutch sculptor Willem Danielsz. van Tetrode (c. 1530-after 1587), a student of Benvenuto Cellini. See for example a bronze Hercules Pomarius in the Abbott Guggenheim Collection (Schwartz 2008, cat. no. 74). The sculptor of the present relief has set the mythological scene amidst classical ruins, with carefully studied antiquities resting under overgrown arches.
