Catalogue Note

"Since the late 1960's, Richard Hickam has developed from a tight photo-realist painter to a Bay-Area-influenced gestural expressionist. Influenced by Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn, Hickam conjures the former's sun-and-neon-drenched color and the latter's loose brushwork and angular sense of abstraction to imbue his subject's with a kind of vague familiarity. His intensely colored, heavily impastoed works are direct and raw."
