A Shahsavan pile bagface, South Caucasus

Pile ranges from approximately 1/6 inch, mostly in borders and indigo areas, with central area low to knotheads; small foldwear area also low to knotheads and spot foundation; small pinholes in upper right corner of field and in inner guard border nearby; 2 x 1 inch reweave in lower left corner; minor scattered repiling. Sides with original selvages, minor fraying and losses. Ends with original flat weave, upper end with hanging rings sewn to reverse.

This Shahsavan bagface, together with the previous lot, is rather uncommon because of the technique used to produce it. The weaving tradition of the tribes belonging to the Shahsavan 'confederation' is characterized predominantly by flatwoven rugs and functional pieces. Here, whereas the format is typically Shahsavan, the knotted pile execution is unusual. Similarly to lot 95 in this sale, the weaver of this bagface produced a piece in which the design aesthetic of flatweaves is merged with more tactile and plush pile knotting.
