Catalogue Note

Similar Melas prayer rugs with such wonderful soft color palette include one formerly in the Collection of Vojtech Blau, sold Sotheby's New York 14 December 2006, lot 82 and another sold Sotheby's New York 6 June 2007, lot 9. The most noticeable similarities these rugs share with the lot offered here are the flowering lattice motif in the field, the palmette-and-vine design above the arch and the small hanging amulets under the inner guard border at the top of the rugs. In all three rugs the dominant colors are madder, yellow and ivory, which are here enriched with a number of secondary hues, including fresh greens and aubergines.
