Verneh horse covers such as this were made in the Karabagh area of the Southern Caucasus and generally depict a camel caravan or are embroidered with flowers. The lot offered here is decorated not only with the popular caravan scene but is also embroidered with large human figures. Interestingly, the camels are placed in both horizontal rows and in vertical columns, adding an intriguing three-dimensional quality to the composition that is rare in shaddas. In addition, the vertical colums and the horizontal rows of smaller camels at the sides and ends can be viewed as the border of this piece. A comparable verneh horse blanket with a similar mixture of large and small animals forming the border was sold Sotheby's New York, 13 December 2007, lot 60.  Another verneh depicting a caravan was sold Sotheby's New York, 3 June 1989, lot 145.
