Condition
To the naked eye:
The painting is in overall very good condition.
It has been properly relined during the first half of the 20th century, maybe a bit strongly.
It's under a very dirty varnish.
Under UV lamp:
Under a green, thick uniform varnish.
There is a band of restoration along the lower edge, due to the friction of the frame.
Some very thin retouching along the face, and the hand of the nymph in the center of the composition. One small retouching on the chin and along the neck of the two seated nymphs.

Catalogue Note
Luigi Domenico Soldini, peintre du XVIIIe siècle d'origine florentine installé en France. Même si la carrière et l'œuvre de cet artiste reste encore à préciser, on sait que l'Académie de Saint-Luc fondée par Simon Vouet l'accueillit dès 1754 et que Soldini y présenta ses tableaux à plusieurs reprises, étant personnellement mentionné en 1775 comme « ancien professeur»[1]. Ce tableau, intitulé Psyché entrant dans la grotte de l'ermite fut exposé au Salon de 1753. Parfois directement associé aux peintres de l'école française du XVIIIe siècle auprès desquels il puisa son inspiration, Soldini était plus précisément connu jusqu'ici pour ses scènes religieuses et ses scènes de genre dont le style n'est pas sans rappeler François Boucher. Une certaine familiarité peut en effet être établie entre Psychée et la figure d'Europe dans Le Rapt d'Europe de François Boucher de 1747 (collection Musée du Louvre) tandis que les jeunes femmes agenouillées rappellent les fameuses scènes pastorales de Boucher dans lesquelles figures féminines et bergères se prélassent dans l'herbe.
