Condition

The paper has been irregularly cut but the image is not affected. Slight staining to the upper sky, otherwise colors are bright and fresh. Traces of old adhesive on verso at each corner. Work is currently affixed to the mat with two paper hinges at top edge. Possibly a small restoration in the lake

Catalogue Note

George Sand, surtout connue comme écrivain, avait un véritable talent de peintre et de dessinateur. Elle aimait portraiturer ses amis et peindre des paysages à l'aquarelle. En 1860-1861, à Nohant ou lors de sa convalescence en Savoie, elle produisit quelques paysages imaginaires qu'elle appelait ses "dendrites " qu'elle créait selon une technique très personnelle: elle écrasait entre deux cartons bristol des couleurs à l'aquarelle. Cet écrasement produisait des nerveures parfois curieuses. Son imagination aidant, elle voyait des bois, des forêts ou des lacs, et elle accentuait ces formes produites par le hasard.
