Condition

Good overall condition. Please note it is oil on paper laid down on canvas, and not as stated in the catalogue. Two small tears on upper left and lower left corners (visible on illustration). One small tear on the left on the stone wall (visible on illustration). Two horizontal creases on the upper right (visible on illustration). A few tiny dots of repaints. Colours are slightly darker than on the illustration.

Catalogue Note

La mise en page de ce petit tableau , peint dans les années 1822-1823, évoque l'art d'Achille-Etna Michallon et Jean-Victor Bertin. Le cadrage resserré, le contraste d'ombre et de lumière et le motif du paysage aperçu à travers un portail ou une arcade se retrouvent chez ces deux peintres, dans l'atelier desquels Corot étudia. La simplicité de la composition rappelle l'enseignement de Valenciennes, qui conseillait aux jeunes paysagistes de travailler en plein air et de peindre sur le motif.
