Under UV light: some retouchings in the horse's legs
Several thin retouchings in the coach and in the wheel
A few cracks are filed in especially above the hat of the standing man
A thin restoration is visible along the frame on the left edge

Catalogue Note
Cette oeuvre de jeunesse fait partie d'une série d'oeuvres consacrées au cheval, sujet dont la mère de l'artiste écrit que son fils avait la passion dès son enfance. Le jeune artiste essaya de se faire connaître en présentant des oeuvres au Salon annuel de Paris et dans des Salons de province, avec des sujets assez divers où il montre sa sensibilité aux nouvelles tendances de la peinture, notament celle de Delacroix et de Chassériau, qui devint son mentor. Il est proche aussi de Dedreux-Dorcy et de son neveu Alfred de Dreux, très célèbre à l'époque pour ses peintures de chevaux, de cavaliers, de courses et d'amazones, sujets que Gustave Moreau multiplie entre 1852 et 1854. Il est probable que ce tableau a été présenté avec trois autres, à l'exposition des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux en 1855, aux côtés de ceux de ses amis Chassériau et Fromentin. Le musée Gustave Moreau à Paris conserve plusieurs exemplaires de scènes où figurent des chevaux et des cavaliers datés de 1854.
