Catalogue Note

Court Architect Ippolit Monigetti (1819-1878) designed a unified scheme of decoration for the interiors of the Imperial yacht Derzhava, finished in 1866 for Emperor Alexander II. Derzhava is the Russian word for orb and in this case refers to the orb that appears clutched in the talons of the double-headed eagle in the Russian state seal. The service, finished between 1871 and 1873, combines the orb of the Russian state seal with various nautical elements such as ropes and anchors.
