Catalogue Note
This two-volume work is subtitled "Kul'turno-istoricheskii ocherk zhizni S.-Peterburga za dva veka -- XVIII i XIX. [A Cultural-Historical Sketch of the Life of St. Petersburg over Two Centuries -- 18th and 19th]" and was issued by the A.I. Vil'borg Printing House, a Purveyor to the Imperial Court, over two years. The offered lot is a complete set of both volumes in the original binding. The text, numerous images, and inserted copies of original historical documents take the development of Nevskii Prospekt, St. Petersburg's main thoroughfare, through two centuries as representing the evolution of the city itself from one dominated by the Imperial Court to a vibrant economic center and one of the commercial hearts of the country. The end of each volume includes an updated, photographic panorama of Nevskii Prospekt in the spirit of Vasilii Sadovnikov's original series (see lot 255 in the present sale).
