Condition

Sanguine, charcoal and pastel on paper. The paper is very slightly buckled and there is some minor, light staining, including a spot in the lower right and lower left corners and a faint vertical line along the right and left side, perhaps from an old frame. There are some scratches in the mother's clothing. In overall fine condition. Held in a gold painted wood frame with matt and under glass. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

"A Madonna of the rice fields wears a huge hat like a halo. Fear stiffens the child but the mother's eyes are trusting. Peasant girls in Annam Province, French Indo-China marry very young and often have many children. The silver ring around the infant's neck is highly prized" (A. Iacovleff, National Geographic Magazine, p. 22).
