Catalogue Note

According to legend, Empress Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine discovered the True Cross of Christ in the year 326 after Bishop Makarios had pointed out to her the site where the Holy Sepulchre was said to be. Helena found three crosses, one of which was recognized as the cross of Christ after a dying man was healed by it. The Elevation of the Cross is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church. Many churches in Russia have been dedicated to this feast which is celebrated on September 14th . The icon comes from the Feastday row of an iconostasis of a church.
