Catalogue Note

For comparison, please see the cinnabar lacquered gold case from the collection of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna which sold, Sotheby's London, 30 November 2009, lot 18.  Of the same form as the Maria Pavlovna case, the present lot exhibits an extremely rare and possibly unique colour of enamel.  A slightly variant example enamelled in opaque white is illustrated, A.K. Snowman, The Art of Karl Fabergé, 1952, no. 103.
