of shield form, applied with the Persain lion-and-sun motif on vari-coloured grounds below an Imperial eagle and ribbon surmount, the reverse inscribed for the recipient 'Samad Chan Momtasos Saltané', suspension loop, struck with illegible maker's mark, possibly AJ(?) (Latin), 56 standard, in original Fabergé fitted wood case

Samad Khan Momtaz os-Saltaneh (1869-1955) was an Persian diplomat posted as Embassy Counsellor in St Petersburg and later as Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Paris.  He served briefly as Prime Minister of Iran in 1918 and was elevated to the rank of Prince in 1921.
