Description

  • height including loop: 55mm
the front enamelled in emerald green over sunburst engine turning, and applied with a winged caduceus and white enamel oval with Cyrillic abbreviation S.P.V. Railway, the reverse engraved with numerous signatures and applied with enamel plaque dated 1894-1901, 56 standard

Condition

There is a minor chip to the front white enamel plaque and it is slightly loose. There is another very minor chip to the white enamel plaque on the reverse.

Catalogue Note

Caduceus is a short staff entwined by two serpents surmounted by wings. In Roman iconography it was often depicted being carried in the left hand of Mercury, a god of trade, and because of this association caduceus also became recognised as a symbol of commerce and negotiation.
