Condition

The sheet is sound, slightly undulated on the left hand edge. There is a minor area of damage approximately 1cm in length to the right of the lamp and what appears to be a small stain approximately 0.5cm in length to the right of the portrait on the right hand wall. A pinhole is visible in the lower right hand corner and very faint spots of light foxing visible on the ceiling. The painting appears to have an uneven layer of vanish. Held in a simple gold painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Sofia was a close friend of Zinaida Serebriakova, who often visited her flat in Paris with her son, Alexander. A pastel portrait by Serebriakova can be seen hanging on the wall of the present lot.
