Pavel Svedomsky and his brother Alexander grew up on the family estate in Perm province. From 1870 they both studied in Düsseldorf and the Munich Academy of Arts under Mikhail Munkacsy. In 1875, they moved together to Rome, but would return to the estate in Russia every summer. Between 1887 and 1892 they worked on the murals of The Life of Christ in St Vladimir's Cathedral, Kiev. In 1896, Pavel took part in the World Exhibition in Paris. His 1882 painting, Medusa was bought by Pavel Tretyakov and is one of five works by Svedomsky in the State Tretyakov Gallery collection.
