Catalogue Note
Between 1858 and 1860 Apollinary Goravsky received a travel scholarship from the Imperial Academy of Arts. During this time he chose to train in Dusseldorf under the famous German realist landscape painter Andreas Akhenbakh (1815-1910), whose influence is felt strongly in the present work. His 1861 European mountain landscapes, View of the River Arve near Chamonix and Landscape between Genoa and Nice, won him the title of Academician. In the 1860s he was an advisor to Pavel Tretyakov on the acquisition of pictures for his gallery.
