Catalogue Note

The present work is the only known portrait of General Gershtentsveig (1790-1848), a hero of the 1812 campaign. He fought at Smolensk, Borodino and at the Battle of Maloyaroslavets under Marshall Kutuzov, where he remained on the field of battle despite severe wounds. He was awarded numerous orders throughout his career, including a Prussian order Pour la mérite and a golden sabre inscribed For Bravery after the Battle of Fère-Champenoise in 1814. The military decorations in the present portrait allow us to date it between 1845, when Gershtentsveig became a General of the Artillery, and 1847, when he was awarded the Order of St Vladimir 1st class.
