Catalogue Note

By adopting the stylistic conventions and the manner of naïve painters, children's drawings and indigenous Russian art forms such as the icon and the lubok, Mikhail Larionov attempted to create works infused with an innocence of vision and vitality of expression. The offered work relates closely to the artist's early Neo-Primitivist period and in particular his series of thirty-two gouaches, Voyage en Turquie, which were conceived in 1906-7 and painted in 1907-9.

This simple and bold composition of this standing figure recalls the nudes from the series, which were inspired by the prehistoric statuettes of the Cucuteni peoples who inhabited the Dnestr Valley where Larionov's native Tiraspol is situated.
