Catalogue Note

Over the course of his sixty year career, Dobuzhinsky designed the decor and costumes for nearly 200 productions in twelve countries. The present lot is a design for a production of Guiuseppe Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 1940. The opera is set in Naples, and during Act III, an assassination takes place at a masked ball. The celebrated Swedish tenor Jussi Bjorling sang the role of Gustav III in the 1940 production.
