Condition

Original canvas. The paint surface is quite dirty with a layer of yellowed varnish. Some faint stretcher marks are visibel to the top of the canvas. UV light reveals retouching to a horizontal line to the left of the subject's head as well as some further retouching to the edges of the canvas and some other minor flecks elsewhere. Held in a wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

'Like a hopeless drunkard, I cannot keep away from evangelistic subjects... they possess me', Repin confessed to Anatoly Konin in a letter of 1921.

This powerful and expressive portrait forms part of a group of studies on New Testament themes, which Repin produced in the mid 1880s, but which were never developed into final larger work. It relates most closely to Judas Iscariot (1885) in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (fig.1).
