Catalogue Note

The shape is typical to 17th and 18th centuries Spanish caskets (see: Sotheby's London, Important Continental Furniture, 4th December 2007, lot 2). The decoration copying European prints is close to the ones on the 18th century Indo-portuguese cabinets (see: Sotheby's New York, Important Old Master Paintings Including European Works of Art, 24th January 2008, lot 160). The inlay design echoes the Ottoman furniture. For a Portuguese casket with Ottoman influence, see: Christie's London, Carpets, Furniture and Works of Art, 27th September 2000, lot 219.
