Description

la base large en dôme à paroi bulbeuse, le fût long annelé et mouluré, la bobèche tubulaire, en cuivre et bronze doré (tombak), décor repoussé, gravé et guilloché de tiges fleuries, déclinant en oblique de motifs noués, cinq cartouches sur la base, inscrits en osmanli; bobèche recouverte en cuivre pour un montage en lampe, petite réparation ancienne en bas du fût

in colour : The gilt is less bright in the reality than in the catalogue illustration The size of the candelstick is much more impressive in the reality than on illustration There is a reddish brown patina The gilt rubbed with worn areas visible on illustration There is an old repaired area (6 cm. High) at the bottom of the shaft There are small dents to the rim at the bottom of the base

Catalogue Note

Inscription: Sâhib al-Khayrât wa râgheb al-darajât, mudîri Ederneli 'Izzat, Effendinek madina mazkura da darghâh Hazrat, Mawlâny-e waqf ildiki sham'adân, sanat 1276H. fi 21 zi al-Qi'da. (This candelstick is an endowment, on 10th June 1860, by Edirneli 'Izzat for the Shrine of His Excellency Mevlâna).  The Shrine of Mevlâna is in the famous Monestery of Mevlevites in Konya. Melvâna Celaleddin Rumi was the founder of the Mevlevites order (d.1273). For another candelstick close in shape and design but smaller and without inscriptions, see: Christie's London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 6th October 2009, lot 189. This candelstick has an exceptional large size. The importance of its dimensions combined with the information given in the text engraved on the base indicate that it was commissionned by an important dignitary.
