Catalogue Note

The design of the present mirror clearly shows the transition of the Palladian architectonic style into the softer more fluid aesthetic of the rococo relating to designs by John Vardy and Matthias Lock of around 1745.  The present mirror incorporates the female mask to the cresting, large stylized shells to the aprons and corners as well as large palm branches found on two drawings by Vardy for Pier mirrors.  The overall fluid shape and use of rococo elements relates to plates 1 and 3 from Lock's Six Sconces, published in 1744, and is very similar to a mirror by Lock, which he supplied John, the 2nd Earl of Poulett for the tapestry room at Hinton House, Somerset.
