Catalogue Note

The present torchères relate to a number of English rococo torchères sharing affinities to designs by Matthias Lock and Thomas Chippendale including a pair which were at Ditchley Park, Oxfordshire, photographed in situ by Country Life and illustrated in C. Hussey, English Country Houses: Early Georgian 1715-1760, 1955, p. 70, pl. 94; another similar pair from Warwick Castle sold at Christie's, London, March 21, 1968, lot 99; another pair was supplied to Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron Scarsdale, for Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire and possibly executed by the firm of Whittle and Norman, and illustrated in Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London: 1968, plate 289.  A further similar pair sold at Christie's, New York, October 11, 2007, lo 60.
