painted in underglaze blue, iron red, enamel and gilt with prunus, peonies, cherries, the gadrooned silver rim and foot connected at sides with strapwork flanked by demi-dolphins, leaf-capped bail handles.

Catalogue Note
The dolphin strapwork motifs on this piece should be compared with those on a pair of silver-mounted Imari tureens, Paris 1726-32 and 1744-50, sold Christie's New York, October 20, 1999, lot 131; the catalogue suggested that the motif might be associated with the Count de Toulouse (1678-1737), Louis XIV's legitimized son by Madame de Montespan, who was named Grand Admiral of France.
