bombé circular with applied gadrooned rims, the sides applied with floral swags spaced by lion heads sumounting paw feet, undersides with initials AR, gilt interiors.
Provenance
The initials are those of Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery, K.G., K.T. (1847-1929)

Catalogue Note
A story - possibly apocryphal - was that Archibald Philip Primrose, from 1858 5th Earl of Rosebery, had three aims: to marry a Rothschild, to win the Derby, and to be Prime Minister. He succeeded at all three. In 1878 he married Hannah, only daughter of Baron Mayer de Rothschild of Mentmore Towers, the richest heiress of her day. His horses won the Derby in 1894, 1895, and 1905, and he was Prime Minister 1894-95.
